Inspect the Surface Finish

The polish or honed finish determines not only the stone’s appearance but also its durability. Examine whether the marble surface is smooth and evenly polished without dull spots or scratches. Poor polishing can indicate low-grade workmanship or incorrect equipment calibration. Use light reflection — a high-quality marble surface should reflect light uniformly.

Check for Cracks and Fissures

Cracks, veins, or fissures are common in natural marble, but excessive or poorly filled cracks can weaken the stone. Inspect both sides of each slab or tile carefully. If cracks are filled, make sure the resin color matches the marble tone and that there are no visible patch marks. Ask for detailed photos or videos if inspection is done remotely.

Check the Dimensions and Thickness

Before shipment, verify the measurements of every slab or tile according to your purchase order. Turkish marble is typically cut in 2 cm or 3 cm thicknesses; deviations may affect installation. Measure with a caliper — differences greater than ±1 mm can indicate poor calibration of the cutting machine.

Evaluate Water Absorption and Density

Marble with high porosity absorbs more water, making it prone to staining. Request a laboratory test or certification showing the stone’s water absorption rate (usually less than 0.5 % for premium grades). Dense and low-porosity marble is ideal for kitchen countertops, floors, and outdoor use.

Confirm Packaging and Edge Protection

Even the best marble can arrive damaged if packaging is poor. Before shipping, confirm that slabs are packed vertically in fumigated wooden crates with rubber separators and corner protectors. Each crate should be labeled with stone type, batch number, and dimensions.

Ask for a Quality Inspection Report

Reliable Turkish suppliers often provide an inspection report with photos, weight, and batch data. If possible, hire a third-party inspector in Turkey (for example, in Afyon or Burdur) to check the goods on your behalf. The cost is minor compared to potential losses from rejected shipments.
